Weavers of Banarasi Saree: Handloom weaving of Banarasi Saree & Silk Fabric

We are currently in Mubarakpur near Varanasi and we can hear the sound of the looms here The sound makes you realise you are in a weavers’ colony we are trying to find out what are their problems and how do they weave handloom sarees First we met the men who dye the yarn. Pure silk yarn is dyed in multiple colours here Q: What are you doing? Ans: Dyeing the cloth. Q: how long does it take to dye one? Ans: 20 minutes. Q: seems hot? Ans: No, its not that hot. Its Silk. How long have you been doing this? Ans: Around 40 years Does anyone else in your family does this? Ans: No Than one saree you buy takes so much effort, this is what we want to show you First we saw dying process, they have shade cards for every demand. Then the yarn is taken to the weaver for weaving. Weaver doesn’t work alone, here you see a father and daughter working on the loom. Usually all other family members help some way or the other What are you weaving? I am weaving a stack of cloth Oh, so you keep it covered so it doesn’t get dirty We have been weaving since we were 8 year old….I have been weaving since last 30 years The skill has been handed down generations No, I will not teach my children how to weave, they will study and do jobs We get very less money…200-300 rupees for a day’s work, we somehow manage Why didn’t you buy a powerloom? You need too much money and there are touts involved Government will give 1 lakh but then I have to pay touts

I suggest trying gimbal for mounting your camera/phone. It will keep your hand out of the frame and is less bulky than a selfie-stick. My 2¢.
