How to Use Silk™ Patching and Finishing Compound

Introducing Silk™, a new patching and finishing compound that provides a smooth finish to a variety of substrates prior to installation of floor coverings. It’s fast-curing and calcium aluminate-based, giving you the speed and convenience you demand. Engineered with Controlled Cure Technology™, Silk™ eliminates installation problems of bond failure, crumbling, mildew and staining of resilient flooring due to free moisture found in traditional underlayments. Its rapid setting formula allows installation of most floor coverings in as little as sixty minutes. It patches and levels concrete and plywood up to one inch, and smoothes the finishes on interior and exterior subfloors. Silk™ easily combines with Custom Building Products’ Patching and Leveling Latex Additive for added floor system strength. Silk™ is an ideal floor leveling solution for installations including ceramic tile, pavers and brick, stone and terrazzo, carpet, all wood types (including parquet), VCT, sheet vinyl flooring, and laminate flooring. It can be applied substrates, including concrete, exterior grade plywood, ceramic tile, pavers, brick, stone, terrazzo, sheet vinyl, VCT and non-water-soluble cutback adhesive. Silk™ is easy to use with just a few tools needed. Cracks in concrete need to be free of loose concrete and debris. To get started, combined two parts powder in one part water. Slowly add powder to liquid while mixing with a low-speed drill, three hundred RPM or less, and mixing paddle, to a lump-free consistency. Mix amounts that can be applied in ten minutes or less. For troweling, force material into all cracks and voids up to one inch thickness, using a broad knife or trowel, and finish flush with surface. For skim coating, use a smooth edged trowel to level the surface area. If a leveling layer over five feet in diameter is required, use XP-1 Self- Leveling Underlayment. Silk™.
